To celebrate the launch of our fantastic new Activewear range, a group of ladies in the office have formed a fitness club to support each other in their goal of getting fit and healthy for 2014. Over the next few months we are going to follow their progress, so here’s a quick introduction to the members of the ‘Lighthouse Club’:
Christmas cake is just too tempting!
Name: Charlotte
Age: 23
Why have you joined the Lighthouse Club?
Over the past year I seem to have piled on weight and my fitness has gone downhill. Even though I am happy with my shape, I would still like to increase my fitness to a more acceptable level.
How do you currently keep fit at the weekends?
Well, I can usually be found doing some cardio exercises around my local shopping centre…I believe that retail therapy is the cure to everything! Followed by a glass or two of wine in a city centre wine bar of course.
What’s your plan of action?
Replacing chocolate and takeaways with healthier snacks and more balanced meals. We had a weight loss group last year and I ended up putting on 9 pounds; but this year I mean business!
Are you a saint or sinner….?
Definitely a sinner! The idea of giving up Walnut Whips is killing me. I keep threatening to remove the sweetie bowl on my desk and replacing it with a fruit bowl – much to the dismay of my colleagues.
How will you work up a sweat?
I will definitely be using the gym more - I have been a member for 5 months but haven’t been for the last 3! I already walk my dog every night but I will attempt to walk further as the weeks go by…even building up into a jog if I’m feeling brave (and can find a suitable disguise!)
Mmmmmmmm... crisps!
Name: Jane
Age: 52
Why have you joined the Lighthouse Club?
To get fitter and try and lose some weight so I can enjoy my favourite hobby of walking in the Lake District.
What will be your motivation?
My competitive streak should make me stick with it when I might be considering giving up. Also the support (and nagging) of my colleagues will encourage me too!
How have you planned for success?
I will follow a healthy eating plan – lots of fruit and veg, low fat protein, dairy and wholemeal bread and pasta. Less wine (unfortunately), and more visits to the gym to use the treadmill and weight machines to help me tone up.
What’s your top swap?
I have pledged to reluctantly forgo my daily packet of McCoys salt and vinegar crisps and will replace with healthy nibbles such as fruit and nuts.
What do you whip up if you want a healthy meal?
Healthy homemade lamb biryani – I still love a good curry!
Decisions decisions! Lemon shortcake or healthy apple?
Name: Sarah
Age: 48
Why have you joined the Lighthouse Club?
As an avid foodie and someone who loves entertaining and baking for friends and family, I have started to see my weight creep up and fitness levels decline. I am also entering that phase of my life when it will be easier to gain weight rather than lose it, so I need to get started!
What will you use as your inspiration?
I was given a spa day as a Christmas present, so I am planning to make a day of it with my mum, my sisters and two young and very attractive nieces. I would love to get into a glamorous swimsuit and feel more like an elegant swan than a waddling duck! We plan to go in May, so I am using this as my goal…
How do you plan on reaching your target?
I am going to use the 5:2 diet. This means you can eat a normal diet for five days a week, while restricting your calorie intake on two days a week. I intend to make healthy soups for lunch at work and have salad in the evenings on the two ‘lighter’ days.
Does this mean the famous Lands’ End food days and ‘Pizza Fridays’ will have to stop?
Not on my watch! It may mean I will monitor my intake on other days however…
Favourite healthy choice: Grilled salmon with charred pak choi.
Biggest weakness: Fruit Gums, crisps and large portions.
We wish the members of the Lighthouse Club lots of luck and encouragement as they embark on their new health and fitness routines…check back soon to find out how the ladies are doing!
