Reader Rich Melon writes in asking, “What do I need to know about fleece?”
Excellent question, Rich. With all the different types of fleece on the market, what’s a fellow to do? Where to begin? Let’s start the discussion with a bit about our Aircore fleece.
In order to develop our exclusive Aircore fleece, we worked with Malden Mills, the inventor of fleece. What we came up with was a fleece in which each fiber has a hollow core, enabling it to trap and hold more warmth, so you stay warmer.
Now I know what you’re thinking: Isn’t that hollow center just taking up space where more fleece could be? And the answer is, Yes. Yes, it is.
But here’s the key: you may remember from your high school science class that nothing keeps you warmer than something that’s hollow.
The sun keeps us warm and as we all know, the sun is essentially a big hollow ball of gas, right? The chimney of your fireplace is hollow, but boy that crackling fire feels mighty toasty on a winter’s day, doesn’t it? And a nice warm stove with chocolate chip cookies baking inside is hollow, except for the delicious cookies inside.
So when you want to stay warm, why would you wear anything that wasn’t hollow? I think the answer is obvious.
Aircore fleece from Lands’ End. Warmer, because it’s hollow.
Signing off, this is Bob, saying, “You’re welcome.”
