Two weeks on from the start of The Lighthouse Club, we thought we'd check back with Charlotte, Jane and Sarah to find out how they're getting on in their quest to feel fitter and healthier in 2014. Did they succumb to the 7 day itch and start raiding the office vending machines or has the last fortnight proven to be an enlightening experience? The ladies tell all…
Charlotte
Life's hard without little treats!
What has been your biggest achievement in the last 2 weeks?
I have resisted all temptations to eat something from the office sweetie bowl which was a constant battle for me (although a spot check of Charlotte's desk revealed it had only been relocated and not removed!)
Worst bit?
The day I went out for a pizza after work – I knew it would make me go over my daily calorie allowance so I thought I may as well 'go large' and stuff my face. However, with a mammoth amount of willpower, I only went 97 calories over my allowance that day; hooray!
Best bit?
I feel healthy and not as tired as I use to, but I miss having lie-ins as my body doesn’t seem to need them anymore (although this obviously has a positive effect on my 9am starts during the week!)
Your tip for making it through the first 14 days?
Allow yourself some treats! Dieting can be a very dark place, especially when all you want is chocolate.
Are you any more at ease in your stretchy lycra now than you were then?
No, I am still wearing baggy clothes to the gym but I am determined to get the lycra out very soon (once I’ve lost a bit more of the belly)!
How are you measuring your results?
I'm a numbers girl and I like to see the results on the scales. I've lost 2lb so far, so it's steady progress! However, I do have a dress that I bought when I was slimmer and never got the chance to wear it - this is the year!
Jane
What are you most proud of so far?
Cutting back on the wine during my recent short break – that was really tough! As we were were self-catering, I planned healthy meals and snacks instead of eating out for every meal (which also saved the pennies too).
Any moments when you thought 'I can't go on'?
Not so far… the support of my fellow Lighthouse Club members have made me more determined to stick to my healthy eating & exercise plan.
Are we likely to see you at the gym in your workout gear then?
Definitely not! It will take a few more months before that happens.
How are you getting on with your 'top swap'?
During the day I am still trying to snack on fruit instead of my favourite salt and vinegar crisps (although a suspicious rustling sound has been heard coming from Jane's desk on a number of occasions…)
What's your new typical daily routine?
Exercise is a bit hit and miss at the moment due to me having to care for our 4 very fussy horses before and after work. So I leave the house at 6.30am every morning and arrive home just after 7pm to cook a healthy tea for me and my husband – phew! This is followed by collapsing on the sofa and then bed at 9pm.
Any promises that haven't materialised yet?
I have long had plans to get my Wii set up and do an hour of Wii Fit in the evening but that has not happened – mainly due to the hectic daily routine described above!
Sarah
Sarah loves trying out new things!
What has been the biggest change for you?
I seem to have stopped my weight from going up…but have not yet started it on the downwards journey. It's always best to stabilise a situation first I think.
What daily changes have you made?
I am eating a lot more fruit at lunchtime now than I was (we're not sure that apple crumble really counts, Sarah….!)
Do you feel any different to when you started?
Not really, but to be honest, I haven't started the regime properly – I had a couple of lovely meals out and was treated to a takeaway last weekend; the opportunities were too good to miss!
Your tip for making it through the first 14 days?
Concentrate on what you can have, rather than on the lovely lovely stuff you can't.
Have you discovered any healthy substitutes you are pleasantly surprised by?
Vodka and low cal tonic is less than 60 calories!
How have you increased your daily exercise?
I continue to take the stairs rather than the lift at work – surely this has got to be worth a few calories? Oh I did some weight-lifting and lunges at the weekend too (ironing and vacuuming). I'm definitely getting the hang of this…!
Well done ladies, a solid start! We'll follow their progress over the coming weeks and ensure we keep all sweets and treats out of reach to keep them on track. Check back soon to see if they've managed to resist temptation….
